New I-9 Form Now Available

March, 2013

Today the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) published the updated Form I-9 which all employers must use to verify the identify and employment authorization of new hires. Although employers have until May 7, 2013 (60 days) to fully implement using the new form, we recommend employers begin using it immediately. As of May 7, 2013, employers who continue to use any previous version of the I-9 form will be out of compliance.

As you will see when you look over the new I-9 document, the entire form and instructions increased in length from five to nine pages. The additional length appears to be due to a lot more detail in the instructions for both employees and employers, which is good to see. The form itself also has a different look. The layout appears to be clearer with regard to what needs to be completed and by whom.

We will be reviewing the changes in the new form and summarizing those in another publication next week. For now, we wanted to make sure to inform you the new I-9 form has been published and to provide you easy access to it here.

As always, if you have questions about I-9 requirements or any other employment issue, please contact us.
