Whether internal or external, Organization Development practitioners can use the same sequence of steps to define, contract for, and proceed with a project through implementation In this session we will examine the different approaches and roles the “Consultant” can take, and how the character of the work and the relationship with the client set the stage for everything else that will transpire during the project.

Key questions will guide our session, including:

  • Who is the client?
  • What desired outcomes are requested/what problems are presenting?
  • Who will the project need to engage to understand the impact of the problems and the possible solution sets?
  • What is the appropriate role or stance for the OD practitioner for this client and this project?

Students will learn:

  • A range of different consulting approaches/models
  • The concepts of project definition/scoping
  • How to define who the client is
  • The elements and dynamics of “contracting” for a project with the client
  • The concept of “stakeholders” (internal and external) and how it impacts the scope of the project and initial data gathering

Part of the the Organization Development Certificate Program.
