Interviewing Questions You Need to be Asking

Posted by: Jenna Reed, Vice President of HR Services and General Counsel on Monday, March 21, 2016

This will come as no shock, but interviewing is no easy task. This is especially true in an employee’s market when attracting great candidates is particularly challenging.

Because we are currently in an employee’s market, now is a great time to evaluate your approach to the interviewing process, starting with the questions you’re asking. Here are a few questions that might help you out:

  1. Tell me about a specific day or period of time at work when you felt particularly inspired, motivated and energized. What specifically were you doing that allowed you to experience this?
  2. Describe the most humbling experience you’ve had in your career.
  3. What would your colleagues say you are the “go-to” person for?
  4. Which of your previous supervisors has liked you the least and what would they have to say about you?
  5. As you evaluate this position and our organization, in terms of fit and meeting your needs, tell me the top four things that are most important to you in making a decision about your next position and work experience.
  6. If you are offered this position and we sit down in a year from now and talk about the year you’ve had, what will we have accomplished together?
  7. What specifically do you think will be challenging for you in this position?
  8. Tell me something in your career you wish you would have done differently, and why.

I also recommend developing customized questions specific to the needs of the position at the time you’re hiring. Mock scenarios are also a great way to test for specific knowledge.

If you need some ideas about how to develop better interview questions and improve your approach, I’d love to connect with you!
